Prof. Dr. Orestis Schinas
Based in Greece
Orestis brings 30+ years in shipping and maritime economics, combining academic research with real-world advisory. He's a professor at multiple maritime universities and has led research on maritime finance, regulation, and sustainability.
But he's not an ivory tower academic. Orestis spent decades working with shipowners on actual business decisions - acquisitions, financing structures, regulatory compliance, decarbonization strategies. He knows the theory and what actually works when you're running a shipping company.
What he brings to HHX.blue:
-
Deep understanding of maritime economics and regulation
-
Former permanent representative to IMO (International Maritime Organization) and IMSO
-
Led many academic workpackages e.g. in EU-InnoWaTr and WASP EU projects
-
Professor network across European maritime universities (Kühne Logistic University, Chalmers, Hamburg School of Business and Administration and others)
-
Research focus: maritime finance, ESG frameworks, decarbonization policy
Why he built HHX.blue: Ship operators face the challenge of an ongoing transition. Regulatory changes e.g. on the Carbon site, changing financing environment, global-economic challenges and many other aspects need to be handled in parallel. Business decisions become more challenging.
Scientifically approved tools and models offer decision support and more comfort in daily decision taking. Real market research is the basis.
The EU projects, Worldbank projects and consulting contracts with Governmental organizations gave us the opportunity to develop and validate tools with real operators- they are freely available."
